The Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center has one of the strongest programs in the nation for Mood Disorders research and treatment. Research spans the continuum from molecular work, through translational and clinical studies, to the most applied treatment trials and outcomes research. Investigators in our Molecular Psychiatry and Basic Neuroscience Division generate significant findings related to neurotrophic growth factors, mechanisms of antidepressant action, and the molecular and cellular bases of neural plasticity. These researchers utilize molecular, cellular, behavioral, biochemical and electrophysiological approaches to elucidate how specific genes may contribute to psychiatric disorders. Particular emphasis is placed on an improved understanding of both depression and the mechanisms by which antidepressants exert their therapeutic effect. Visit our research page here.
